Carrying gold from Saudi Arabia to India?

A returning male passenger can bring up to 20 g of gold jewellery duty-free and a female passenger up to 40 g; anything above is taxed, and your allowance depends on how long you've stayed abroad. Bars and coins are not covered by the jewellery allowance. Always declare gold on arrival.

About gold prices in Saudi Arabia

Why Saudi Arabia and Dubai cost almost the same

The riyal and the UAE dirham are both pegged to the US dollar, and gold trades in dollars globally. So once you convert currencies, Saudi Arabia and Dubai land on virtually the same per-gram price — the metal is identical, and only local making charges, VAT and shop margins create a small gap. That's why our Saudi Arabia rate is derived from the live Dubai bullion price.

One rate across the country

Saudi Arabia gold is a single national rate, so Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Makkah, Madinah all show the same per-gram price on a given day. A search for "Riyadh gold rate" returns the same number — only the making charge and shop offers vary.

24K, 22K, 21K and 18K in Saudi Arabia

21K (87.5% pure) is the everyday Gulf jewellery standard, brighter and a little harder than 22K. 24K is for bars and investment, 22K is favoured by Indian and South Asian buyers, and 18K suits diamond and modern pieces. VAT of 15% applies to jewellery and making charges, but investment-grade 999 bars are zero-rated.

Bringing it home to India

The headline saving shrinks once Indian customs duty is added above your duty-free allowance, so Gulf gold makes most sense within your limit or for jewellery you'll keep abroad. Use the customs calculator before you buy, and keep your invoice for declaration.

Rates are reference Saudi Arabia metal prices, based on the daily Dubai gold rate via the fixed SAR/USD peg; INR conversions use Rs 25.53/SAR. Confirm with the jeweller — final price includes making charges and 15% VAT on jewellery.

Saudi Arabia gold FAQs

Gold in Saudi Arabia is SAR 572.00 per gram for 24K (about Rs 14,604), SAR 524.25 for 22K and SAR 500.50 for 21K. These are metal rates, before making charges and 15% VAT on jewellery.
Yes. Saudi Arabia has one national gold rate, so Riyadh and every other city show the same per-gram price on a given day. Only the making charge and shop offers differ — there is no separate 'city rate'.
They are almost identical. Both the riyal and the UAE dirham are pegged to the US dollar, so Saudi Arabia and Dubai track the same global bullion price — any gap is just local making charges, VAT and shop margins, not the metal itself.
At today's rate, Saudi Arabia 22K is about Rs 13,385/g versus India's Rs 14,950/g — roughly Rs 1,565/g (10%) cheaper, and free of India's GST. But carrying it into India means customs duty above your duty-free allowance, which narrows the real saving.
As a rough guide, a returning male passenger residing abroad can bring up to 20 g of gold jewellery duty-free and a female passenger up to 40 g; gold beyond that is taxed, and the allowance depends on how long you've stayed abroad. Bars and coins are not covered by the jewellery allowance — declare gold on arrival.
The riyal has a fixed peg to the US dollar, so when the global gold price (quoted in dollars) moves, the local price moves with it almost one-for-one. That's also why all the Gulf states show nearly the same gold rate once you convert currencies.
Yesterday 24K gold in Saudi Arabia was about SAR 564.01/g; today it's SAR 572.00, a change of SAR 7.99/g. The 10-day table below shows the full run.
It's the pure-metal rate per gram. Bars, coins and jewellery cost more — shops add a making charge and 15% VAT on jewellery, and investment 999 bars carry the smallest premium. The metal value shown is the base every shop prices up from.
They're purity stamps: 999 is 24K (99.9% gold), 916 is 22K, 875 is 21K — the everyday Gulf standard — and 750 is 18K. A higher number means more gold per gram, and a higher price.
